Who buys my disciple’s book? My disciple? Or me?

This is up to you, but it’s nice for the discipler to buy his/her disciple their book and then ask them to pass on the kindness (if possible) when they disciple another.

Can I disciple a group/couple, etc?

Conversations is one-on-one discipleship – that is its strength. Having said that, it’s possible to do a small group of people, but you may not get the best sharing of life in a group. If a couple, it’s helpful to disciple couple-to-couple. But any discipleship is better than no discipleship!

What should I do if I’m asked a question I can’t answer?

Don’t be intimidated. Tell your disciple you don’t know the answer to that question, but you will find out and get back to them. You always have a group of people in our Discipling Another ministry to help you through. Don’t hesitate to contact us.

Should I only disciple someone who I know has already accepted Christ? Or can I disciple someone who is more of a seeker?

First Steps Conversations is written for a new believer (or renewed believer) to help set a great foundation in the first three months after accepting Jesus as their Lord and Savior. But, if you have someone who wants to know more about Jesus and what having a relationship with Him is all about, you can definitely use Conversations as that resource.

Can I use this material to disciple my teen or young adult children?

Yes, you can, but you might not be the best person to do that. Sometimes our kids respond better to hearing from another trusted adult. Perhaps a young adult who has been through First Steps Conversations would be a good fit. During the discipleship process, there are times that invite vulnerability – sharing doubts, discouragements, and life issues. A teen might be hesitant to share these with a parent but would share with another trusted adult. Sharing is an important part of the process. Feel free to talk to us about your situation. But you know your child best!

Do I need to meet in person? Or can we use FaceTime or Zoom?

While meeting in person is ideal, we know that the past few years have made “ideal” look different. If your disciple feels comfortable meeting in person, then go ahead. If not, you can FaceTime or Zoom with them to go over the lessons. We have several disciplers meeting by Zoom with disciples out-of-state and internationally, so we know it works! It’s better to meet in some way than not at all.

I don’t feel I’ve been a Christian long enough. I don’t feel as though I know enough to be able to disciple someone else.

That’s the beauty of First Steps Conversations. It is a complete “script” to walk you and your disciple through the 10 sessions. It’s as easy as 1-2-3! Each session is divided into three Devotions, the interactive Content, and two Stretch Activities. It’s not all on you to have the answers or need to know what to say. If your disciple has a question you don’t feel you can answer, our Discipling Another team will help you through. If you still feel unsure, you can contact us to set up a time for one of our team to walk you through a couple of sessions, so you understand better what to do. You can do this!
